Welcome to “Witten Life”, a journal I am starting to share the story of our family farm. I am excited to start this new project and at the same time, a little nervous. I am not the greatest writer, but I figure in order to improve as a person, I must push myself to make those fears go away. My hope is to give you a glimpse into our way of life. We are so excited and blessed to be in Agriculture today. There is a new found interest in food, where it is grown and who is growing it. So I want to share our daily experiences and give you more insight into who we are and what goes into growing your food.
My 2 brothers (Tom and Scott) and I are 3rd generation vegetable farmers. In 1958, my grandpa (Pappy) and grandma (Frances) bought the farm we call home today. But our history goes back much further than that. We can trace our family’s history of growing vegetables on the Ohio River in Monroe county (about 80 miles from our current farm) back 250 years.
We grow 14 different fruits and veggies including Strawberries, Cantaloupe, Tomatoes and Green Beans. But the star veggie on the farm is our World Famous Sweet Corn. People take our corn all over the country saying “this is the sweetest corn we have ever tasted”. Sweet corn is our passion. We Think, Eat and Sleep sweet corn 365 days a year.
One of the main reasons Pappy purchased our farm was to have a roadside stand to sell his vegetables. As our family grew, we decided to add an additional farm market in the closest town with a lot of people. We opened our first satellite market in Marietta, OH. in 1986. Today, we have 22 locations across Ohio and West Virginia. My job at the farm is to manage these locations with an amazing group of people. People are also my passion. I am a teacher by trade, but chose this as my profession because I love our farm and could imagine all the amazing things we could accomplish working together. My classroom may look a little different, but I am still teaching and educating my staff about agriculture everyday.
My other passion(I have a lot of interests) is Flowers. My grandma is my inspiration. The time we spent in her flower garden was special and I grew to love flowers just like her. As a little girl, we would walk through the garden and she would talk to the flowers and pat them gently. I thought that was hilarious and we would giggle until it hurt. Those memories inspired me to begin growing the beautiful hanging baskets and container gardens we sell today. By the way, the flowers will be here this week. I can’t wait!
Welcome to “Witten Life”, I hope you will enjoy reading and getting to know our family farm.
