You can tell winter is over for us at The Witten Farm. The pace has quickened and there is a sense of urgency to make decisions for the 2015 season. We are ready to go! Only 2 months until opening day. This is hard to believe since we are just getting ready to plant flowers. Today we are opening the greenhouse and the MAGIC begins.
The first day in the greenhouse is one of my favorite days of the year. All the baby plants arrive, so small and green, filling the greenhouse with the fresh fragrance of spring. I can’t help but be happy. It is always hard for me to believe that in only 8-12 short weeks, these baby plants will grow into the big, beautiful hanging baskets that turn our porches into summer havens.
This will be our 20th year growing flowers. When I look back to the 1st day: I was so wet behind the ears. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I was determined to be successful. So I dug in and here I am, 20 years later and loving it every bit as much as I did then. It’s funny how some things have changed a lot and others have not changed at all. Every year, I still get in a tizzy making sure the designs of the hanging baskets are unique and will WOW everyone. They are like my babies, so I always want them to look their best. I search high and low through every magazine and flower catalog I can get my hands on until my mind is filled with colors. Then, I close my eyes and picture the color combinations, writing them down as I go. Now that the greenhouses are open, let the designing begin.
